Its now the time of year when we are preparing to get our bees ready for winter, this includes checking the bees have enough stores to see them through the winter period as there will be little or no forage coming in.
We will be checking the hives and giving them feed if they need it, this can be sugar syrup or fondant dependent on temperatures.
We have just started to treat the bees for Varroa (Varroa Destructor) this is a parasitic mite that attacks and feeds on honey bees. Varroa can only reproduce in a honey bee colony.
There are various treatments that can be used to reduce the Varroa count, the majority of these have to be treated once all the honey for human consumption has been extracted.
Once the temperatures start to drop we need to avoid opening the hive as much as possible as this can chill the colony and kill them off. #DunnyBees #Dunnys-Honey
